I used to think the Presidency’s closure would be a continuous process. I was wrong. Yesterday, I still received around 325 emails, which is close to the daily average during the Presidency. We are still organising lots of press events within these last few days, as well as a series of other communication projects are also in the pipeline; and there are many other projects that keep us really busy. The Presidency has not yet finished its professional work. On 30 June, we will witness one of the key events of the entire term of the Presidency: the last round of accession talks with Croatia. On 1 July, professional work, as well as communication activities, will suffer a “sudden death”.
So the ceremonial moments are yet to come, work is still going on at full speed, but the last four days that are left from the presidency, keep running through the head of everybody. A colleague of mine told me that he would throw a huge party at the weekend. Another one will go trekking in the mountains for a week. As for me, I prefer to join the third one, who said that from this Friday, he would try to give his family the time that was lost over the past six months.
Will I suffer from post-presidency depression like many colleagues from other Member States who did? Will i miss the phone ringing or feel empty because of seeing a huge drop in my email turnover? I came to like this job, but I can’t imagine that. Of course, I may be wrong yet again.

I had been following the developments of the European Union as a journalist over the past 16 years, but since the summer of 2010, I lead the Hungarian Foreign Ministry’s EU Presidency Communication Department. Some will say I betrayed my profession. But the way I see it, there are exceptional situations when you just got to descend from the grand stands and join the game. The Hungarian EU Presidency is such a period for me. It is an honour for me to be able to help the work of the Presidency, but I cannot break lose completely from my beloved profession. I will be writing this blog partly for this very reason.
Like the hero of novel by Hungarian humorist Frigyes Karinthy, who dreamed of being simultaneously two cats that were playing with each other.
